Why is my Blender render completely black?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerUsually the scene has no light, the world background is black, or the camera is placed inside or facing away from the objects. Check those three things first.

Lighting and World Settings

If the scene has no lights and the World color is black, there is nothing to illuminate the objects. Add a light, such as an area or sun light, or set a bright world color or HDRI. Eevee and Cycles both depend on light sources to show the model clearly.

Check the exposure setting in the Color Management panel too. A very low exposure value can make the whole image dark, even when lights are present. Resetting it to zero is a quick test.

  • Add at least one light to the scene
  • Set a world color or HDRI background
  • Check the exposure in Color Management
  • Try a sun light to test visibility

Camera and Object Checks

Make sure the camera is pointed at the objects and not inside them. The active camera must be set in the Scene properties, and the camera's clip start and end values must include the subject. An object outside the clipping range will not appear.

Also check that the objects are visible in the render, not hidden or disabled for rendering. A quick look in the Outliner can reveal hidden items.

If the scene still looks dark, check the material on the object. A material with a very dark base color or no connection to the output can appear black. Test with a simple white material to see whether the lighting setup is working.

Common mistakes

  • Adding lights but forgetting the world is black and the camera faces away.
  • Leaving the exposure set to a very low value after testing.
