How do I save and export my Blender projects?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerSave your project as a .blend file via File > Save. To export for other software, use File > Export and choose a format like FBX, OBJ, or glTF.

Saving .blend Files

File > Save (or Ctrl+S) saves your entire project, including all objects, materials, and settings, as a .blend file. Use File > Save As to choose a location and name. Blender also has an autosave feature, but manual saving is recommended.

You can save different versions using File > Save As and incrementing the filename. This is useful for keeping backups before major changes.

Exporting to Other Formats

To share your models with other software, use File > Export. Common formats include FBX (for game engines and animation), OBJ (for static meshes), and glTF (for web and real-time applications).

Each format has specific export settings. For example, when exporting to FBX, you can choose whether to include animations, apply modifiers, and set the scale. Always check the export options to ensure compatibility with your target software.

  • Save .blend with Ctrl+S
  • Export via File > Export
  • Common formats: FBX, OBJ, glTF
  • Check export settings for scale and modifiers

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to save before exporting, losing recent changes.
  • Not checking export settings, leading to incorrect scale or missing textures.
  • Assuming all formats support all features; some may not include materials or animations.
